How are you celebrating St. Patrick’s Day?

Here at the Pantry we served up samples of Kerrygold Irish Reserve Cheddar on Saturday to welcome in the good saint this week.  This 2 year old cheddar is made with milk from grass fed cows and you can taste the difference.  Is it a coincidence that this farmhouse cheddar pairs well with Guinness?   Besides our Kerrygold Reserve Cheddar we have over 15 cheddars you can choose from. If your cheese palate runs to something different than cheddar try pairing some of the following with your Guinness:

  • Jarlsberg
  • Smoked Gouda
  • Camembert
  • Sharp Provolone
  • St. Paulin…a Canadian version of Port Salut.
  • Goat Cheese like Cablanca Gouda or Woolrich Goat Mottzarella
  • Blue Cheese…we carry a variety including Cambozola, St. Agur, Danish Extra Creamy Blue. Or  try Blue Shropshire an amazing blue cheddar!

St. Patrick’s Day always seems to herald spring here in Welland, Ontario. So even if you aren’t Irish it’s worth celebrating.  So plan something special this week…and if you are foregoing Guinness for lent or expect guests who pass on alcohol, we have an awesome alternative made by Carlsberg in Europe: Karmi Zurawina is a .5% alcohol dark ale beverage that offers a combination of deep, caramel flavor with the cranberry, dark cherry and chocolate aroma.

Comfort Food for Family Day

Food that brings the most comfort are those that evoke strong positive memories.  The foods we ate at our grandmother’s house regardless if we called her Gramma, Oma, Nana or Nagymama are like culinary hugs. February 15 will be Family Day in parts of Canada. It is a day to celebrate family. What better way to celebrate than to enjoy those comfort foods that bring back warm family memories.

This February at The Pantry we are celebrating comfort foods. We are starting off the month by featuring Dutch Meatball Soup. We have all the ingredients to make a pot of soup that tastes like Oma’s. Need some help putting comfort into your pot?

Welcome Vicky!

IMG_4841Welcome to our new employee, Vicky Stringer. We are enjoying her presence here at the store as much as she is enjoying all our cheeses…like this piece of Isle of Kintyre Highland Chief mature Cheddar with single malt whiskey.  Vicky isn’t the only person who thinks this cheese could be very addicting! Vicky helped me package up almost 100 pieces of cheese yesterday. So our cheese cooler is full and ready to please!

Last week we received our first shipment from Viking Foods. Viking is a Toronto based Scandinavian import company. Today and yesterday,  I enjoyed a great sandwich with a Fazer wholegrain organic rye sour dough bun for lunch. Each package contains 4 buns that toast up like English muffins. The flavour is amazing! Yesterday, I tried mayonaise and Black Forest ham. Today I had Cervelaat salami with Jarlsburg cheese, mayo and cucumber.  Both were delicious!

Matjes Herring…we already had frozen salt herring. Now we have matjes herring tidbits and fillets. Matjes herring is cured in a brine…not as sour as “zurre haring”. We are selling the fillets by the piece. The pail has already been “cracked open” and I expect those fillets are already history!  We also have Anchovies/Sprats.

Ever wondered why we have a Hooker Street in Welland…? Sorry! No historic red light district here. Many of Welland’s older houses were made of brick from Thaddeus Hooker’s brick works just south of Hooker Street in Welland. Thaddeus’ classic “Ontario” house circa 1856/7 was probably the first brick house in all of Welland. Read more about the history of 33 Maple St.
