Last week we received our first shipment from Viking Foods. Viking is a Toronto based Scandinavian import company. Today and yesterday,  I enjoyed a great sandwich with a Fazer wholegrain organic rye sour dough bun for lunch. Each package contains 4 buns that toast up like English muffins. The flavour is amazing! Yesterday, I tried mayonaise and Black Forest ham. Today I had Cervelaat salami with Jarlsburg cheese, mayo and cucumber.  Both were delicious!

Matjes Herring…we already had frozen salt herring. Now we have matjes herring tidbits and fillets. Matjes herring is cured in a brine…not as sour as “zurre haring”. We are selling the fillets by the piece. The pail has already been “cracked open” and I expect those fillets are already history!  We also have Anchovies/Sprats.

Ever wondered why we have a Hooker Street in Welland…? Sorry! No historic red light district here. Many of Welland’s older houses were made of brick from Thaddeus Hooker’s brick works just south of Hooker Street in Welland. Thaddeus’ classic “Ontario” house circa 1856/7 was probably the first brick house in all of Welland. Read more about the history of 33 Maple St.

Bellavitano Raspberry Cheddar

Bellavitano cheeses have been made by the Sartori family for 4 generations since 1939. This award winning cheddar* is made by being marinated carefully crafted cheddar in a handmade raspberry ale. Tarragon Vinaigrette


  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 3 Tbsp Maille white wine tarragon vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp Dutch mustard
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp black pepper
  • 1 small clove garlic crushed or 1/4 tsp garlic paste
  • 1/3 cup olive oil

Measure ingredients into a lidded container.  Shake and drizzle over tossed salad with goat cheese.

Serves 4
