Van Straten Oranje Koek

This is another recipe that owes its origin to the province of Friesland.  Two layers of cookie style cake seasoned with spices like nutmeg and anise. Historically it also included dried orange peel.  Between the two layers is a layer of almond filling. It is then iced with a pink glaze and decorated with creamy white icing. This cake was traditionally served at weddings. Our customers serve this at birthdays and special occasions.  No one seems to know why it is is called Oranje because it is not coloured orange nor is it used to honour the Dutch monarchy. The name also is not a reference to the orange peel that sometimes flavours it because then it would be called “sinasappel koek“!  Regardless, the name brings smiles to Frieslander’s faces when they hear it is being served!

Our online store is set up to allow you to browse our European Pantry shelves from the comfort of your home. It also enables you to pre-order and make arrangements for pick-up or drop-off in our delivery areas. We strive to keep the prices listed on our online store current but as a small retailer it is impossible for us to be 100% accurate for the 1000+ products we list. Furthermore, package weight variations for meat and cheese products make it impossible to provide accurate fixed prices.

Therefore, as you shop your “total order” will be an APPROXIMATE total. After you submit your order, we will communicate any changes in pricing as well as the actual prices of weighed items. You will then be able to confirm your order and arrange payment. Thank you for shopping with us! We hope it is a pleasant experience. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about our products or our ordering process.
