If you look at a clove carefully you will notice that despite its woody texture it is actually a dried flower bud. It comes from a tree in the Myrtle family that is native to Indonesia but is grown in other countries, too. The flavour is warm and strong. The spice, which is often enjoyed with the other warm spices, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice, is used in a wide variety of ways. You can use it to brew a tea, or to flavour stews, pickles,cakes, rice, pumpkin pie, ham…the list is quite long. However, if you use the cloves whole as opposed to ground, remove them before serving your dish because they remain woody and are not pleasant to bite into!
