Capucijners by Coroos

Capucijners are marrowfat peas. When picked they look like regular green peas but turn grey brown when cooked. The story goes that they received their name from an order of monks called capucines because their grey colour reminded people of the robes these monks wore.  When dried these beans have great keeping capabilities so they became a staple for the long ocean trips of the seafaring Dutch.Their texture is starchier than what you would expect from either beans or peas. They are still served with bacon, potatoes, sausage or meatballs and pickles like they have been for centuries as what was called “The Captain’s Dinner”.   However, they can also be added to salads or served with molasses and bacon. 796 ml tin
