Canned & Bottled Fruit
We take it for granted but historically fresh fruit was a luxury for most people! My mother grew up in the greenhouse sector of Holland where her father grew peaches and grapes under glass. For her an orange was a luxury but a friend she met in Canada told of her father cutting a peach in pieces so each family member could have a taste. As a child, my father-in-law took a long wartime train ride to the most southern part of Holland to pick cherries. At home the cherries were preserved and saved for birthdays and other special occasions. Opening a jar of preserved fruit today reminds me of that past and how very blessed we are.
